1924年10月，直奉第二次大战爆发。就在直系军阀吴佩孚与奉系军阀张作霖在山海关激战时，吴佩孚所属第三军司令冯玉祥却突然挥师入京，并于22日深夜，发动政变，包围总统府，囚禁了大总统曹锟。曹锟身陷囹圄，吴佩孚紧急从山海关前线驰援，但是精锐主力却被围困天津，孤立无援。群龙无首，山海关前线十万大军快速崩溃，最终吴佩孚不得不乘船南遁，直系政权由此覆灭。战争尽管结束，但北京政局却面临着重重危机。直奉大战后，奉军开始大举入关，早已准备问鼎中原的张作霖与冯玉祥在直隶地区展开争夺，角逐北京政权。

This multiplicity of trades is related to the word and the common point of two episodes four that compõem or film. Four stories, four protagonists: two men, two women who reflect, in different ways, on writing, reading, the generational clash and the creative process.

Edward is an editor in a small English publishing house. The story concerns what happens when he receives a very good manuscript from Nicholas, an old friend, who up until now has been a hack writer. The manuscript sheds light on events both men lived through, and Edward comes to the conviction that it reveals that it was Nicholas who raped the woman Edward loved, and that he is therefore responsible for her subsequent suicide. Very carefully, he plots his revenge.

City Edition immerses us in a lived experience of the fourth estate, beginning with the print-run and purchase of a single issue of the New York Times; a rapid found-footage montage of political happenings, wars, sports, celebrity, and natural disasters ensues—the whole world in bits and pieces. These disparate scenes are woven in and out of one another as though rendering visually the dissonance of reading the folded pages of a newspaper as a singular thread of events.
